About Sherree McKellar
A Kailua resident since 1963 (Kailua High ’67), this former elementary school teacher is relatively new to the art scene. She was inspired by her 82-year old mother (former Windward Artists Guild president, Jeanne Porter) who took up art in her fifties. After 15 years with the Dept. of Education, Sherree spent 10 years in the corporate world as Vice President of Certified Management. Tired of 60-hour work weeks, she signed up for a watercolor class with Susan Cardenas at Ben Franklin in 2007, not realizing that watercolors were the most challenging of all the mediums. Then she enrolled in drawing classes under Snowden Hodges at Windward Community College (WCC).
While taking the WCC Atelier, she fell in love with oils though she occasionally works in acrylics. She then hired local artists she admired like Mark Brown, Kristen Olson and Ed Furuike to teach herself and a small group of fellow artists on her lanai. In 2012 she took the Ray Roberts workshop at the Maui Plein Air Invitational. In 2013, she took the Mary Pettis three-day plein air workshop in Kapalua, Maui.
She is currently a docent at the Honolulu Museum of Art. She served as Education Coordinator for Windward Artists Guild and managed the Association of Hawaii Artists Electronic Bulletin Board. She is the past Art-in-the-Park coordinator for LaniKailua Outdoor Circle’s I Love Kailua Town Party.
Inspired by daily walks at dawn on Kailua Beach, she loves to paint people on the beach, flowers and pets. Giclees of her work are available in any size and to fit any budget. To see her other art pieces, find her on Facebook and Pinterest, email her at [email protected] or call 808 375 9643 for a studio appointment.
